Pope Views Capitalism As The New Tyranny

“How is it not a news item when an elderly homeless person dies of exposure, but it’s news when the market loses two points?”
–Pope Francis

Pope Francis is making international news again this week, criticizing the global economic system, attacking “idolatry of money,” and pleading with politicians to guarantee all citizens “dignified work, education, and healthcare.”

The Catholic Church has been criticized itself over the years for a number of issues, and it’s worship of wealth is one of the top points of critique. Reports circulated last fall that the Catholic Church spent $170 Billion in fiscal year 2012 through charities it owns or subsidiaries of the Vatican .

Put into perspective, only 16 US companies had revenues over $170 Billion. Apple had $157 Billion in revenues.

The Church is also the largest charitable organization in the U.S. Its main group, Catholic Charities USA, along with its subsidiaries, reportedly has a paid staff of more than 65,000 and serves more than 10 million people. The Economist says CCUSA distributed nearly $5 Billion in aid to the poor in 2010. On the negative side, the Catholic Church has paid out around $3.3 billion in settlements regarding molestation of children.

Another black eye was delivered to the Church a few weeks ago, when “Bishop Bling Bling” (Franz-Peter Tebartz van Elst) was suspended as the Bishop of Limburg, for having spent $42 Million on the renovation of his residential complex.

As for the impact of the Pope’s message, about 1 in 7 people on the planet self-identify as Catholic (Catholic world population is 1.2 billion.) So the Pope’s message does carry tremendous influence, even for those who are not Catholic.

This week the Pope released his 84 page apostolic exhortation, and calls unfettered capitalism “tyranny.” He urges the rich to share their wealth. “Just as the commandment ‘Thou shalt not kill’ sets a clear limit in order to safeguard the value of human life, today we also have to say ‘thou shalt not’ to an economy of exclusion and inequality. Such an economy kills.” Francis wrote in the document issued Tuesday.

“I prefer a Church which is bruised, hurting, and dirty because it has been out on the streets, rather than a Church which is unhealthy from being confined and from clinging to its own security,” he wrote.

The 76-year old pontiff calls for an overhaul of the global financial system and warns that unequal distribution of wealth inevitably leads to violence. “As long as the problems of the poor are not radically resolved by rejecting the absolute autonomy of markets and financial speculation, and by attacking the structural causes of inequality, no solution will be found for the world’s problems or, for that matter, to any problems,” he wrote.

Denying this was simple populism, he called for action”beyond a simple welfare mentality,” and added “I beg the Lord to grant us more politicians who are genuinely disturbed by the state of society, the people, the lives of the poor.”

The Pope has recently made headlines by embracing and kissing an extremely disfigured man, as well as saying the Church needs to “stop” being “obsessed” with gays, birth control, and abortion. As for the issue of gays, the Pope said, “who am I to judge?”

    This new Pope is awesome.

What can the Pope offer regarding his knowledge of economics, the how-to mechanics of how to do better in the world? He provides reminders of human-kind’s duty to the less fortunate, a very necessary thing IMO. Christians believe Jesus was the greatest, most loving and, don’t forget, the wisest human being that ever lived, “A greater than Solomon”, so our Lord declared re: his own ministry to the cities and towns of Palestine. Catholics are taught the pope is the “Vicar” (representative) of Christ. Can’t we then expect economic no-how in addition to the moral guidance graciously provided by the vicar? This know-how could mate with the not-so-inconsiderable desire that already exists to aid the poor. The world has a history with something close to Marxism and it failed; Ayn Rand is declared by the left as selfish & evil so what is the smartest way to revise the economy, a way that will also leave the God-given freedoms of man intact?

I think the new pope confuses Capitalism with Cooperatism…Capitalism is dead in this world in all but the micro-scale. When governments grant subsidies and enact massive regulations that benefit one group over another and trade in favors and bailouts….capitalism has ceased to exist. Capitalism is a respect, progress and self-sufficiency our current cooperatist climate is on of greed and slavery funneling money from the majority of People to the rich and influential cooperate elite. Ayn Rand anyone?

    • RalphLawlerLAC

Great point, should be brought o Jeffrey’s attention, more so this Jucko guy. Great quote “Capitalism is dead in this world in all but the micro-scale. When governments grant subsidies and enact massive regulations that benefit one group over another and trade in favors and bailouts….capitalism has ceased to exist” — Jesse Dailey

The pope confused ? ja, Your ego is making you blind!

  • asiliveandbreathe

This is substandard reporting. So Ben, are you simply hiring reporters based on how cute hey look?

  • Sagebrush

He’s right, The ultra rich and corporate elite pushing for globalization would love to see totalitarian oligarchy or an oligarchic dictatorship as the global government. The corruption infested western governments are already leaning in that direction.

  • rogerfgay

I haven’t seen the full text of the Pope’s remarks, but from the reporting I don’t see what the controversy is about. Another guy who opposed “unfettered capitalism” was Adam Smith, and I think he knew a thing or two about capitalism.

  • Jucko

If we had anything other than Capitalism, we’d be living in the 1300′s still. I bet he has benefited from Capitalism is some way and likely still does, therefore his argument is invalid.

    • Maryjane420

Idiot learn to read, the pope never mentioned getting rid of Capitalism nor that the idea of Capitalism is bad. He is talking about unfettered Capitalism in other words crony Capitalism which is what we have now.

      • Patrick Kniesler

He does ask politicians to guarantee free stuff for people, so he actually is against free markets, according to this reporting.

What he doesn’t seem to understand (And I haven’t read his exhortation yet) is that you cannot separate socialism from corruption. He needs to read Bastiat’s The Law. Very short and good – everyone should read it.

    • g.johnon

incorrect sir. if we had stuck by the constituitonal model of enterprise, we would not be in the fubar situation we find ourselves in now.

    • RalphLawlerLAC

Less than 0.20% of your population rakes in over 40% of the gross national income. Capitalism isn’t black or white.. it’s become grey. Corrupt capitalism has taken over.. it’s not about working hard, the american dream.. the wealth inequality in America is at an all time high.. it’s completely out of proportion. Instead of looking at these words as an “attack” on capitalism take them as a strategy for world reform. Say capitalism with a 700 million personal wealth cap. That alone would solve poverty. Americans like yourself who are misinformed and apathetic toward human rights are a small part of the problem. Ignorance is no excuse.

      • Jeffrey

You just described crony capitalism or corporatism, not capitalism in the free market sense. Thats the capitalism liberty-minded people advocate for. And it was the capitalism that built the wealth of America. Our current model is destroying it.

        • RalphLawlerLAC

Yeah.. we agree 100%. Were you trying to start a debate using my own points? We currently have false capitalism. We need a clean, pure version.

          • Jeffrey

No debate. High five for our awesomeness!

    • Chris Moschini

You’re generalizing all capitalism to be the same. The Pope is decrying excessive inequality, poverty that leads to avoidable death, and praising dignified work.

The most useful part of capitalism is the competition that kicks people off their lazy pedestal – you don’t feel like working very hard, someone comes in and says I’ll give you the same thing but faster/better, you get motivated. But that needs to be just one of many priorities in an economy – in particular, people need the opportunity to work, or you can’t have the fair competition that drives that motivation. They need to be protected from those who have more than them from leveraging their power to take it all, or instead of motivated competition you have something just a few shades away from theft.

But our economy and many others in the world are doing a bad job of protecting opportunity, and he’s calling that out.

      • JoJo58

        This all falls under #27, 36 and 37. http://rense.com/general32/americ.htm

        • Chris Moschini

Opportunity isn’t socialist. It’s a reasonable, good goal of an effective economy. Calling everything that isn’t “I have more money so I get whatever I want” socialism is just extremist and unhelpful.

          • JoJo58

I never wrote that opportunity was socialist.

        • Jucko

That’s just paranoia. I don’t like big corporations taking over everything, but it doesn’t mean it’s a bad side of Capitalism nor a precursor to Communism or Socialism. Windows can be as big as it wants, but it’ll never live up to the stability and features of a Linux distro.

          • JoJo58

It’s not paranoia. You can read the entire list and tick off one after another of the listed goals. You’ve obviously missed the point of not only the goals specified, but failed to see how many of the goals have been achieved and compared Windows to Linux.

            Whatever.

          • Jucko

No, my example worked fine as Microsoft is a big corporation that got sued for taking over markets, and Linux is not a corporation at all yet is a major market share. That list is paranoia, all it’s missing is a statement saying restroom patrons are required to put the toilet seat down.

          • JoJo58

So instead of using liberals tactics and writing that the list I used is paranoia, try being specific. WHICH item exactly on the list is “paranoia”?

            1. U.S. acceptance of coexistence as the only alternative
            to atomic war.

            2. U.S. willingness to capitulate in preference to engaging
            in atomic war.

            3. Develop the illusion that total disarmament [by] the
United States would be a demonstration of moral strength.

            4. Permit free trade between all nations regardless of
Communist affiliation and regardless of whether or not items could be used
            for war.

            5. Extension of long-term loans to Russia and Soviet
            satellites.

            6. Provide American aid to all nations regardless of
            Communist domination.

            7. Grant recognition of Red China. Admission of Red China
            to the U.N.

            8. Set up East and West Germany as separate states in
spite of Khrushchev’s promise in 1955 to settle the German question by
free elections under supervision of the U.N.

            9. Prolong the conferences to ban atomic tests because
the United States has agreed to suspend tests as long as negotiations are
            in progress.

            10. Allow all Soviet satellites individual representation
            in the U.N.

            11. Promote the U.N. as the only hope for mankind. If
its charter is rewritten, demand that it be set up as a one-world government
with its own independent armed forces. (Some Communist leaders believe
the world can be taken over as easily by the U.N. as by Moscow. Sometimes
these two centers compete with each other as they are now doing in the
            Congo.)

            12. Resist any attempt to outlaw the Communist Party.

            13. Do away with all loyalty oaths.

            14. Continue giving Russia access to the U.S. Patent
            Office.

            15. Capture one or both of the political parties in the
            United States.

            16. Use technical decisions of the courts to weaken basic
American institutions by claiming their activities violate civil rights.

            17. Get control of the schools. Use them as transmission
belts for socialism and current Communist propaganda. Soften the curriculum.
Get control of teachers’ associations. Put the party line in textbooks.

            18. Gain control of all student newspapers.

            19. Use student riots to foment public protests against
programs or organizations which are under Communist attack.

            20. Infiltrate the press. Get control of book-review
            assignments, editorial writing, policy-making positions.

            21. Gain control of key positions in radio, TV, and motion
            pictures.

            22. Continue discrediting American culture by degrading
all forms of artistic expression. An American Communist cell was told to
“eliminate all good sculpture from parks and buildings, substitute
            shapeless, awkward and meaningless forms.”

            23. Control art critics and directors of art museums.
“Our plan is to promote ugliness, repulsive, meaningless art.”

            24. Eliminate all laws governing obscenity by calling
them “censorship” and a violation of free speech and free press.

            25. Break down cultural standards of morality by promoting
pornography and obscenity in books, magazines, motion pictures, radio,
            and TV.

            26. Present homosexuality, degeneracy and promiscuity
            as “normal, natural, healthy.”

            27. Infiltrate the churches and replace revealed religion
with “social” religion. Discredit the Bible and emphasize the
need for intellectual maturity, which does not need a “religious crutch.”

            28. Eliminate prayer or any phase of religious expression
in the schools on the ground that it violates the principle of “separation
            of church and state.”

            29. Discredit the American Constitution by calling it
inadequate, old-fashioned, out of step with modern needs, a hindrance to
cooperation between nations on a worldwide basis.

            30. Discredit the American Founding Fathers. Present
them as selfish aristocrats who had no concern for the “common man.”

            31. Belittle all forms of American culture and discourage
the teaching of American history on the ground that it was only a minor
part of the “big picture.” Give more emphasis to Russian history
            since the Communists took over.

            32. Support any socialist movement to give centralized
control over any part of the culture–education, social agencies, welfare
            programs, mental health clinics, etc.

            33. Eliminate all laws or procedures which interfere
with the operation of the Communist apparatus.

            34. Eliminate the House Committee on Un-American Activities.

            35. Discredit and eventually dismantle the FBI.

            36. Infiltrate and gain control of more unions.

            37. Infiltrate and gain control of big business.

            38. Transfer some of the powers of arrest from the police
to social agencies. Treat all behavioral problems as psychiatric disorders
which no one but psychiatrists can understand [or treat].

            39. Dominate the psychiatric profession and use mental
health laws as a means of gaining coercive control over those who oppose
            Communist goals.

            40. Discredit the family as an institution. Encourage
            promiscuity and easy divorce.

            41. Emphasize the need to raise children away from the
negative influence of parents. Attribute prejudices, mental blocks and
retarding of children to suppressive influence of parents.

            42. Create the impression that violence and insurrection
are legitimate aspects of the American tradition; that students and special-interest
groups should rise up and use ["]united force["] to solve economic,
            political or social problems.

            43. Overthrow all colonial governments before native
            populations are ready for self-government.

            44. Internationalize the Panama Canal.

            45. Repeal the Connally reservation so the United States
cannot prevent the World Court from seizing jurisdiction [over domestic
problems. Give the World Court jurisdiction] over nations and individuals
            alike.

          • Jucko

The ENTIRE list is paranoia, as I already stated. It’s downslope fallacy and not based on anything that would determine the fate of a government or economy. How about you do the opposite of a liberal tactic and back all those items up with facts.

          • JoJo58

Funny. I asked for a specific example of which item on the list was “paranoia” I even copied and pasted the list so that you and others can see what I’m referring to and in typical liberal fashion, you don’t cite anything on the list. You simply write “paranoia” and hope that something will stick. I’m surprised that you didn’t add the liberal favorites like “hater, racist, homophobe, flat earther” to add to the mix.

          • Jucko

Can you read? I clearly said to back up ALL those statements? Not one, not two … but all of them. Your schizo disorder is showing, you’re probably a RINO or wear a tin foil hat a lot.

          • JoJo58

Back up all of the statements that I listed from the book? You mean that you actually READ all of the statements and yet STILL cannot see how many of those statements have come to pass?

This is the problem with liberals. You want everyone else to do your thinking for you. That’s how we ended up with obama, de blaisio, and the clintons.

          • Jucko

I’m not a liberal numb nuts, you however…not being able to support ANY of those claims makes it obvious you can’t back up any of them.

          • JoJo58

You MUST be a liberal “numb nut” because even a CHILD can read the very simple list of communist objectives I posted and see that going down the list that most of them have been achieved, and a few are almost completely achieved. Which one, specifically are you having trouble understanding? These goals seem quite self explanatory and “SUPPORT” themselves if you follow the news, or have a grasp of history.

            1. U.S. acceptance of coexistence as the only alternative to atomic war.

            2. U.S. willingness to capitulate in preference to engaging in atomic war.

It will probably be available at your nearest library that is a federal repository. Call them and ask them. Your college library is probably a repository. This is an excellent source of government records. Another source are your Congress Critters. They should be more than happy to help you in this matter. You will find the Ten Planks of the Communist Manifesto interesting at this point.

Once more, you still cannot back up any of those statements as a typical liberal can’t and cannot understand the meaning behind the statement “all of them.” Are you done kidding yourself now?

          • JoJo58

What back up do you need in order to know that socialism is being promoted in the school system? What back up do you need to know that homosexuality is being promoted as “natural”? What back up do you need in order to realize that our sovereignty is being handed over to the UN? What back up do you need to know that BOTH parties are becoming one and the same? What back up do you need when you hear obama say that the Constitution is an outdated document? What backup do you need when you hear people (such as university profs, congressmen etc) state that the Constitution is a “living document”? You REALLY have never heard anyone say these things, or read articles in magazines or newspapers stating this? You REALLY need someone to tell you what is happening because you really don’t know, or choose not to?

If you wish to continue being blind, be my guest.

wow,, the pope finally makes sense a couple of times so you go right to lambasting the catholics? not that they don’t generally deserve it, but at least give them credit in the rare times when they earn it.

  • Old Catholic

Great article! I grew up Catholic, but left the church at 18 to pursue pure spirituality. I feel like I can support the church again with this Pope. I would never go back, but I am beginning to feel more favorable towards it now.

He is what is needed in the Catholic faith. Our local cathedral did a renovation that cost over $8 million, and then their spokesperson practically patted themselves on the back because of their contribution to the poor. They just seemed as cold as their new Italian marble floors.
It seems like a lot of money was being spent to lock out those that were seeking God.
I am looking forward to hearing more from Pope Francis.

It is already implemented in Mexico, CIA handled to mafias to continue doing their criminal activities in Mexico. Obama wants to silence Mexican government, but mexican americans are not going to be silenced after killing thousands of mexican and mexican americans because he is a capo from Chicago mafias. Indans are killing americans as part of the CIA partnership. Go away from USA and Mexico killers India is not an allie according with NSA system, so why are they working as spies in government and Corporates? http://www.alternet.org/education/billionaire-bill-gates-and-his-army-reformers-terrible-idea-bringing-ruthless-corporate#! I think that Mexico and USA may be better than India, if we let the mexican and US PhD and scientists work together in each module of the ERP, and créate something really advance for our civilization, mexican american should be working together for a new Era. The true is that the mexican and US education is without direction to have it, http://breakingthenewstoday.blogspot.co.uk/2013/11/48000-children-in-india-paralysed-by.html it is necessary to unify all the level of education, and structure the knowledge by modules at all the levels to créate the productivity models, I created. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jTMv2XAUHP4 The mexican and US government should work at all levels of the mexican and US education and structure the knowledge in the way to be more productive, protect our companies, our Nation. https://www.facebook.com/notes/adalberto-cervantes-rodriguez/how-did-oracle-steal-my-ideas/484337798305612 No podemos dejar las empresas mexicanas y americanas en manos de estos tipos por falta de acuerdos en el sector educativo, realmente falta un reforma educativa que redunde productivamente en el sistema mexicano y americano https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?v=474264039355030&set=vb.388313877950047&type=2&theater

Would like to hear this Pope talk about the Mondragon Cooperative started by a Parish Priest, who taught at a trade school in the Basque region of Spain, who encouraged his students to start worker owned coops, of which combined into the $23 billion a year Mondragon Cooperative. Its Ceos earn mainly 5 times what the rank and file earn. Its worker owners who all have a vote in how its run get 45% of the profits, which they cash in when they retire, with 10% going to the needs of the Community, and the rest goes back into running the business. Its not perfect, by its expanding International, but that is because it has to deal with cut-throats.

“Hit piece” Anti capitalism? I call bullshit.

  • Jenny Parker Wendling

Ben, you left out what he said about abortion and morality IN this same document. I agree with your perspective on much but you ended this post by making it sound as if he’s somehow willing and able to change the teaching of the Church on these matters….which he is definitely not.

    • AJ_Olding

      Ben didn’t write this.

Good lord. Nearly all of the corruption had absolutely nothing to do with capitalism. Corruption, if not more, also happens with socialism and nationalism. Capitalism is where the consumer decides what business is successful. What we are experiencing now is a reduction in capitalism with an unhealthy increase in federal nationalism and socialism, neither of which produce wealth, they just move it up the ladder. Capitalism allows money to trickle down. The other two don’t.

  • Barreiro Juls

Capitalism = voluntary association =/= corporatism.
The pope must still be a fascist…

  • Don’t be a Dick Morris

Tell me brother, when did the Pope, abandon reason, for madness.

  • ddmeyers

Is the Pope planning off selling of Vatican holdings?

  • AJ_Olding

    I’m done.

Nice article! Too bad Francis can’t hammer these ideas into more ppl. I have read his statement and he is either truly benevolent (now) or desperately trying to lure more sheep to the church.
